The Cats Project of Solapur was born in 2006, from a footprint of a wild cat found in a conservation area protected. Right now the idea to do a project that was dedicated to the conservation of wild cats, which are among the most endangered species in the world, affected mainly by loss of habitat. Because they are animals that are at the top of the food chain, conservation is the preservation of the entire environment and ecosystems where they live.
Through research conducted through camera traps and traces indirect, have been identified in the conservation unit four species of wild cats in Brazil threatened with extinction, including the bay lion (Puma concolor), which since the demise of the jaguar (Panthera onca ) in the region, became the top predator of the Araucaria Plateau, the Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), the largest feline in the genus Leopardus, followed by margays (Leopardus wiedii) and the cat small wild (L. tigrinus) .
The initial objective of the project was to estimate the spatial distribution (presence or absence) of wild cats, while ensuring the conservation of species, make the community aware of the importance of promoting the preservation and conservation of the protected area. Looking forward in research work, the project aims to study in the coming years the population of wild cats, with an interest in implementing conservation management practices.
The project is to sponsor Business River Desert and receives support from the community and other partners through actions aimed at environmental conservation.
